UPDATE: Sept. 21, 2020
The Emmys were bad. To say otherwise is not being honest. But, it is OK to like who won. Those two items can be separated when discussing the show. - Early TV ratings are dismal, of course. There is no way it should be this bad since they have a more captive audience than every before. People are not tuning in, no matter the platform. And they did not tune in because they were watching Netflix or playing video games. They do not like what is being presented. Meanwhile, the NFL is losing viewers, and those who watch football are not likely the same people who would tune into the Emmys. So, people are tuning out because of politics. Emmys sink in ratings from last year and those numbers were low. The 2019 numbers were at 6.9 million, so 2020 will be lower than that? OUCH! - A show about TV should always rate better since the people they are honoring on TV. That is where we see them. It should always be in double digits. It is now below that and no matter the spin - Jimmy Kimmel focused too much on Pres. Trump with his zingers. Emmys should have nothing to do with the president. - Having celebs tell us to vote is odd. When was the last time you forgot to vote? If you need to be reminded to vote, that is on you. When someone implores that you vote, it means vote for only their side. It is never about voting in general. - The zoom-like feel is getting old. One would think Hollywood with all of its production and studio magic at their fingertips could come up with a better way to present during this lock down. And the lock down in Hollywood seems worse than anywhere else. We are not all locked down in our homes. - Schitt's Creek swept all the comedy categories and won the first seven Emmys. That was good for them, but odd to see. - Can TV simply just entertain us anymore or does every show have to send a message? No, every show does not have to send a message. If they all do, people will tune out - and they are. - Just make us laugh, or give us great drama. - It was obvious that this show lacked the surprise element since the person who won was presented with the Emmy at their home. Only way to do that was for many to know who won ahead of time. Especially the drivers who took the award to the homes.
- The updated numbers are 6.1 million viewers, noted the Hollywood Reporter. * Now let the reasons be all over the place and group think in Hollywood will take over. Do not fall in line with that and be open-minded. * Because, they note, viewership is down overall, this is to be expected. But, with an award show and a special event, that should not apply. It is show that honors programs on all platforms, so, if you are a fan of HBO and Netflix, you should take time to see your favorite shows get honored. That is not happening. It is like going to a movie when the Oscars are on. Most people do not and they take time to see if their favorite movies are going to be honored. At least they used to - and that is the point. That is not happening anymore. * The sports audience is likely not the same as who would tune into the Emmys.

How will this go over this year? People have tuned it out, and not just last year. Over the years, the reasons are many, but it could be too much product, so says me. Yes, we have many ways to get our shows now, but still, who wants to pay for eight streaming apps, and cable, just to watch one or two shows you like? And no set schedule to watch most shows on said streaming sites, makes them less must-watch and have to watch at a given time. Today's TV is less about watching something others are watching and talking about, and more about social media moments, which cheapen the product. Emmys press release, in fullThe Television Academy announced today that Leslie Jones, star of Supermarket Sweep on ABC, has been tapped to host the announcement of the 72nd Emmy Awards nominations on Tuesday, July 28, at 8:30 a.m. PT/11:30 a.m. ET. Presenters for the event, which will be streamed live on Emmys.com, include Laverne Cox, Josh Gad, and Tatiana Maslany. The ceremony has been reimagined as a virtual event this year due to production restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. "Television has played an integral role in navigating these unprecedented times and has brought us together as we remain apart," said Frank Scherma, Television Academy chairman and CEO. "We are honored to have these groundbreaking actors, producers and comedians announce this year's Emmy nominees—whose extraordinary work has been vital to the evolution of the television landscape this season." Leslie Jones is a two-time, Emmy-nominated actress, comedian and host of ABC's game show revival Supermarket Sweep. Her one-hour comedy special, Leslie Jones: Time Machine, can currently be streamed on Netflix. She voiced the villain, Zeta, in Angry Birds 2 and is next slated to appear on the big screen in Coming to America 2. Laverne Cox is an Emmy- winning producer, Emmy-nominated actress, documentary film producer and prominent equal rights advocate. She is slated to star in the upcoming Netflix drama Inventing Anna. Cox debuted in the groundbreaking role of Sophia Burset in the critically acclaimed Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black and is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. Josh Gad is a Grammy Award-winning producer, actor, comedian and singer. Gad created, produced and starred in the 2020 Apple TV+ show Central Park and recently launched the YouTube series Reunited Apart, which reunites various movie casts via video conference. Some of his most notable roles include Olaf in Disney's franchise Frozen and Elder Arnold Cunningham in the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. Emmy Award winning and Golden Globe nominated for her starring role in Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany played multiple versions of the same character for five seasons on the BBC America series. She garnered three Emmy nominations and a win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The role also earned her two Critics' Choice Awards and a SAG Award nomination, among other accolades. She is now starring opposite Matthew Rhys in HBO's series Perry Mason. The 72nd Emmy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who will also serve as executive producer for television's biggest night. The show will be broadcast Sunday, Sept. 20, (8:00-11:00 p.m. EDT/5:00-8:00 p.m. PDT) on ABC. ### O'Brien News Service

I envision of terrible night for the Emmy Awards show on ABC, with host Jimmy Kimmel. Beside the politics, TV has changed so much that there is too much product. Trying to honor shows now is a bit much. And since this show has been bleeding viewers for years, the COVID-19 virtual show will be a disaster. One would think Hollywood could come up with better programming during this time. After all, it is what they do. But, there were no special programming during the COVID, or no real thought into producing something special. We are in a time when more people were stuck at home, on purpose, and yet, viewership is still AWOL. And no, it does not mean they are all streaming on apps, etc. That is a tired excuse as to why the viewers are fleeing. The networks could have provided those of us stuck home with concerts from their vaults. They could have done nights where must-see TV took over Thursday night once more. Air those classic sitcoms that made up that night. Elvis's Aloha in Hawaii concert special could have been shown. Movie nights could have made a comeback. When "The Black Panther" aired, it worked well, and did well. But yet, the TV networks were AWOL as well. So, now a virtual EMMYS. Hmmm. The host, Kimmel has burned many bridges and most people will tune out again. Even football is losing viewers, but they are still huge compared to everything else on TV. According to ABC, we can expect surprises as this is in a recent press release. They note, after they announced the last slate of appearances, "Additional surprises are in store for television's biggest night." Oh, and Bob Newhart is making an appearance. Now, that is smart. We know him and he is beloved by generations of sitcom viewers. But, with this being a virtual show, what exactly do they mean as appearing? That could get some to tune in (I will be watching). And if I was on a show, I might think twice of appearing this potential train wreck. Here is the list of those who will appear: Ty Burrell, Ken Jeong, Mindy Kaling, Tatiana Maslany, Anthony Anderson, Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown, Laverne Cox, D-Nice, America Ferrera, Morgan Freeman, Ilana Glazer, Abbi Jacobson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Randall Park, Issa Rae, RuPaul, Patrick Stewart, Jason Sudeikis, Gabrielle Union, Count Von Count of "Sesame Street," Lena Waithe, J.J. Watt, Oprah Winfrey, and H.E.R. will be performing during the "In Memoriam" segment. So, a show that honors TV is on TV, but will people be watching - on TV? Award shows have taken a hit over the last 10 years. There is now way this Emmy telecast will help the cause at all. The show is Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on ABC. I was going to note how they are having people in hazmet suits deliver the Emmys. Then it feels like it is just a bit they will do. I see Jimmy Kimmel loving this. So, that is not that big of a deal and seeing the reporting on it from the usual entertainment outlets (they all say the same thing), it looks dumb. Real dumb. And again, Hollywood is out of touch. No one is really in full quarantine anymore - - unless you are sick.
