Tim's Take

Award Season:
OK, tell the truth. The Award Season has lost much of its glitz and hype. The sad thing is Hollywood did it to themselves. They are slowly making themselves irrelevant. I know, as I have covered this beat 30+ years. I loved it and my goal when I was young was to work there (I did for some time) and then cover it. I did that, too. But, it has changed and feels less special now, as they are making themselves nonessential, so to speak. It is sad for me. The main reason to me - they are breaking the first rule of show business, do not attack your audience. They are attacking the audience and hate half of them. And the presence of 24/7 social media and overexposure is not good. Plus, believe it or not, there is too much content. Stars need to pull back and be mysterious again, where they are not constantly in our face.
KFC's commerical touting their plant-based chicken is not made to meet vegan standards. Just how processed is plant-based meat?
"Spider-Man: No Way Home" has leaped into the top films of all-time, worldwide and domestic (those charts are different, of course). To me, the domestic is more important. It is a solid movie and my guess is there are repeat movie-goers on this one. The romance to the action will keep youngsters going back. "Titanic" had that aspect as well, even though, to me, the sip was the star. To many, many others, it was Jack and Rose, over and over again. That is what makes a mega-box office smash.
Oscars will have a host, says ABC. It is back to airing in March.
"Spider Man: No Way Home" was the best time I had at the theater in a long time. Probably since "Bohemian Rhapsody." The latter got an Oscar nod and won four. "Spider Man: No Way Home" deserves some Oscar love, too. It is a great film, and not just super hero movie. There is nothing wrong with awarding these films.
Last year's dismal Oscars saw 10 million viewers. Think about that for one moment. It is a special about movies and yet so low, pandemic or not. One would think when people would shut in their homes, TV shows would be rising in ratings. I mean, it is a more captive audience, yet so low for special shows. It is mind-boggling and needs a deeper dive than blaming more ways to watch and a pandemic.
Bob Saget was darn funny and silly, and dirty. He was one of the good guys in Hollywood.
The most exciting bowl game this time around was the Rose Bowl between Ohio State vs Utah.
Cincy vs Alabama had 16 million, while Georgia vs Michigan saw 16.5 million, per Nielsen. The Rose Bowl 15.9 million
The CHAMPIONSHIP game had 22.6 million, which beats most shows on TV but it is a special, live game, and should be higher. Much like the Oscars should. I am not a fan of the semi-final on New Year's Eve, and it may be time to expand the playoff.
I like commercials, so I do not care if I watch shows with them. I sues that time to take a break and soak in what I just watched. But, I do see them differently since I worked on many in my 20s.
The FCC does not regulate cable.
Tom Holland would make a great Oscar host considering the fact that he is talented and stars in a movie people have actually seen.
